Leaders

Commvault

Commvault has a long history in enterprise data resilience. It recently revamped its core product by folding its spinout Metallic back into the product and adding capabilities from acquisitions like TrapX and Appranix, forming its Threatwise and Cloud Rewind features respectively.

  1. Strategy. Commvault’s strategic strengths include a commitment to innovation through R&D and acquisition as well as a well-developed partner ecosystem of channel, technology, go-to-market, and infrastructure partners. Its vision and commitment to roadmap, pricing, and support services are in line with peers. Roadmap highlights include integration of Appranix infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and cloud resilience capabilities, backup support for AI applications, Google Workspace protection, Cleanroom Recovery automated testing with forensic restores, improved cyber resilience visibility, and deeper security platform integrations.
  2. Capabilities. Commvault has the most comprehensive supported workload list of all the vendors in this evaluation. Its strengths include data resilience for operating systems and hypervisors, Kubernetes and containers, databases, common storage types and specific vendor storage systems, distributed and parallel filesystems, hyperscale cloud/IaaS, protection for generative AI models/data, and directly supported SaaS platforms. It also has strengths in backup storage targets; recovery to alternate infrastructure; API enablement and ease of use; backup integrity, vaults, and air gap; and regulatory and compliance features. Other criteria evaluated are on par with peers.
  3. Customer feedback. Reference customers noted the breadth of Commvault’s workload coverage and commented on the superior reliability of the product.
  4. Forrester’s take. Commvault is a great fit for customers looking to protect large, complex IT environments across on-premises, cloud, and SaaS.
